Biotechnology
has taken a giant leap from its classical version of
preparing cheese, bread and wine to its contemporary
specific form. Today it is known as a collection of
technologies using cells and biological molecules. We
can manipulate organisms at the molecular level via
genes. Owing to extraordinary specificity of cells and
molecules, the tools and techniques of biotechnology
are quite precise and are tailored to operate in known,
predictable ways. As a result, the products of biotechnology
are being targeted to solve specific problems having
fewer unintended consequences. Today important thrust
areas are Fermentation, Plant and Animal Cell Culture,
recombinant DNA technology, Forensic science, Antisense
technology, Protein & Tissue engineering technology,
Monoclonal antibody technology, Biosensor technology,
DNA fingerprinting and diagnostic techniques, Bioinformatics,
Biodegradation.
|
So today the term "Biotechnology"
is used in a more restricted sense to mean the application
of molecular biology techniques to identify genes responsible
for particular traits; to clone, study, characterize,
and manipulate them; and finally, to insert them into
different organisms. It's difficult to imagine an area
of agriculture or life that can't be affected. |
